Are you “gay” or “gathoey”?

The English term "gay" is also used as a Thai word. But the feeling is not strong enough for a special “gayness” among Thai gays. Thais use the words “gathoey" or "ladyboy” for someone who is effeminate and cross-dressed in outrageous drag.

There are many wild gay venues in Bangkok, and the commercial gay hangouts are localized in the Patpong/Suriwong Road area. Sois 2 and 4 in Silom Road are very well frequented. Soi 2 caters more for the dance crowd and Soi 4 is known for its more friendly, relaxed bar crowd. To check out the more local Thais, head down to the Saphan Kwai area. There are also many gay bars and saunas along Sukhumvit Road and in other areas.
